LESSON 9:   Creating Tutorials by Goldilocks Goes Digital

Literature for K-8

In order to use the Digital Pipeline you must sign in and in order to get your password you would call:
800-440-2919 to get the current password.

When you get to Literature you would open NoveList K-8, and would be given all of the choices listed below:

I wanted to look up Fantasy for a 9 year old boy so that was my next choice.

You will get many choices, and you can explore your options. I limited my search to 9-12 year olds and All.  

The topic I selected was Fantasy.

Using NoveList K-8 I selected Wizards, and this screen shows up.

If you scroll down, Recommended Read Lists is visible.  I was presented options - an icon list of books/authors.  Scroll over the book icon and a description of the book shows up. You can add it to your folder so you can print out a list to take to the library and find.
You can go further and read excerpts from your selections.  Double click on the book icon, which takes you to the book screen (partial screen shot below):

On the right side below the book icon it says "First Chapter." Click on First Chapter and you get to read whatever excerpt they selected for you to read and get a feel for the book.

You can go back on your browser to look at other titles or change your search options to get other books that are similar or by the same authors and even switch your criteria to a different age group or adult lists.  Play with the options and see what comes up.

For example, you like an author.  Start at the home page of NoveList K-8, click the author button and type in Last Name, First Name of whomever you like.  Click Search, which will take you to a screen like this:

Now select Author-Read-ALikes

which will take you to a screen like this, giving you reasons why the listed authors' books are similar.  Some you may like, others not so much.

“ Use the Read-Alike features  NoveList K-8 to find several new authors or titles that you might like to read based on your favorite books.” You can also find other recommendations based on the criteria you select.  Save several of those selections to your folder. You can use

 e-mail and send the selections to yourself or to the patron.

Reflections on my experience  planning and posting a tutorial.  Firstly,  I have really enjoyed this class and although I am a novice in the use of digital resources I now have been introduced to Sled and the Digital Pipeline, which I find valuable and fun to use.  I am not a librarian or technology- wise teacher, just a retired Social Studies teacher who loves learning new things.  My project is less than adequate but after putting in at least eight hours I am satisfied that I have much more to learn!  I ran into difficulty first using pages to transfer information and later redoing it all on Word.  After both attempts I still had a hard time transferring and posting images.  To my good fortune, a friend in the class spent a couple of hours with me this morning to help polish up my tutorial.  It is now easier to follow, more complete and has more value.  I look forward to more classes and experiences at both the Digital Pipeline and Blogging.  I was introduced to the program Clarify today and watch a view of the tutorials and think it is a program I may want to purchase.  I plan to share the tutorial with my grandson's teachers and other students and parents who may not have used NoveList before.

Lesson 8: Alaskana

I had the most fun with this lesson because of all the wonderful resources that were available for a historian with a distant family connection to five generations of Alaskans.  I have always found useful things in the archives and previously been involved in ownership of a historic site at Alaskaland, and in more recent times the historic Chatanika Gold Camp and Restaurant.  Years ago. when I would research the history of Alaskaland and try to find information about some artifacts I would go into the library and speak with Rene Blahuta who would lead me in the right direction.  My husband use to travel all over Alaska collecting and trading with the indigenous peoples who nicknamed him, "Ivory Jack"!  My son-in-law was a Herning, who's father is Earl Beistline, a well known professor of Mining at the UAF and as a young man worked on the Gold Dredge in Chatanika, Alaska.  Now on to the assignment!

1.  Name two categories in SLED and provide one website from each.  Also does anything surprise you?

I was surprised with all the games available for teens that were actually good for the mind.  I also enjoyed finding more references to the Northern Lights.

2.  I used FAQ in SLED to answer all the following:
The Pope met Presidient Reagan in Alaska on May 2, 1984 and I was there with my 3 year old daughter.
Found on the Arts, Literature and History reference pages.
The official break-up date for the Nenana Ice Classic in 1942 was April 30, 1:28PM. This was found on the Daily Living, Recreation and Sports page.
According to FAQ, the Alaska Native people were officially given US citizenship in 1924 by the Congress although they were offered it by the Territorial Legislature in 1915 through an act called "The Enabling Act". This was found on the Native and Indigenous Peoples list.
The words to the Alaska Flag song could be found on the Reference Desk.
I could not find the percentage of US volcanoes found in Alaska.
3.  I used the community profile page to find out the community of Eek had a population of 318 and a sales tax of 2%.  In comparison Fairbanks had a population within the city of 30,547 and no sales tax.


4. Search the Alaska's Digital Archives using Fairbanks and give the URL and title.
The URL was    www.ci.fairbanks.ak.us and I found the following items:

City Fee Schedule and Bed Tax
Garbage service and street and snow removal
Invitations to Bid
Code of Ordinances
Moving To Fairbanks & More
I had a favorite and it was about snow removal dated back March 12 and explaining that snow berms would not be removed!

I would have found many different pictures and information showing Fairbanks from different locations like the Chena River, and downtown.
First I went to digital archives at:vilda.alaska.edu/cdm/searchterm/Fairbanks.
You then get a variety of thumbnails to select and when you click on them a description is given along with copyright information.  You can enlarge the pictures for full views, quite interesting.


5.  In the Alaska Polar &Periodical Index I searched for Will Rogers and found 50 titles over several pages.
One of the interesting articles was Front page of Fairbanks Daily News-Miner on August 16, 1935 reporting the death of Will Rogers and Wiley Post the evening before in an airplane crash) by Candy Waugaman

6.  Using the Alaska State Museums Collection Search, can you locate a halibut hook? What's the objects ID.   Did you find anything else of interest?


I found the picture of the halibut hook-Ernest Smeltzer-Tlingit-wood/carved string/ivory-halibut fishing but I could not find an ID number, not sure I was in the correct place.  I looked at several other pictures and think this is a great reference site.

7.  Name two projects from Project Jukebox and who was interviewed in each.

This site had some interesting interviews but I searched for on that  was on Gold Mining and this is where I spent an hour or more listening to Jane William's interviews about Circle and Central.  This is where she spoke of my son-in-laws grandparents, Bill and Alice Herning and the town of Circle and Circle Hot Springs.  Jane spoke of the first wave of old-timers in the late 1800's and then her group or the 2nd Wave of gold explorers.  I found this fascinating because I am interested in the family history and many of the people mentioned I have met.  For example in the 70's she mention Bob Cacy and Jack Tripp building a cover for the hot pool at circle, it was during this time that I was a frequent visitor to Circle and I know those men.

As you can tell I really found this assignment invigorating and the research was so much fun, thank you for setting this up as it was a great lesson.

Lesson 7A Auto Repair Reference Center

1.  On the Find your Vehicle of the Auto Repair Reference Center I used the list of The 50 Most Famous cars to look up a car we once owned" The Delorian".  This was the original Batmobile in the movie and also in the movie Back To The Future.   This Irish made car was ill fated and was said to have a time lapse effect that made it appear to be flying through time????  They did not last long and all the essential details about the engine were listed on this site. sports car, inecisely 88 mph, the DMC 12 was ca

It showed that it was only made in 1981!  All metal and silver in color, and resembled a space craft. I tried to post the picture I found on the list but it wouldn't copy.

2.  My current automobile in Alaska is a R350 Mercedes-Benz and I did not see any recalls listed on it.

In checking out the maintenance schedule I did not find it user friendly.  It was much too complicated and hard to navigate.  Each time I was forced to repeat all my information and then a list that was so long would appear and I would get lost.

I liked what this offered and if I wanted to learn some basic automotive skills I think the videos would help as I am a visual, hands-on learner .  I am now able to recommend this site to students that are working on cars or my husband who is a collector of classic cars and often wants to find out things about each unique car.

So I am revising the first part of this exercise because I used the list of 50 Famous cars for the first part rather than the Digital Pipeline example.  I have gone back and retraced my steps using our California Automobile, a 2000 Jaguar S Car with a V8 engine.  I looked at the diagrams of the heating and air-conditioning systems along with the fuel systems diagrams and they were "Greek"  to me!   I checked and there were no recalls that I could find on this particular vehicle.  I did not find this exercise too important to me except to refer other people who are looking for information on their vehicles to this site that is filled with information.  I pay my$125.00 a year and belong to the AutoClub and wherever I may be located they come to my aid.  Mechanics and I do not mix and I am sure I would hurt myself if I tried to fix a problem.

On Part 7B I looked up Harley Davidson, Super Sport 2004 and it showed how to run routine maintenance check items.  I looked over all the sections offered so I could recommend them if needed to others but the chances I would ever need this site is doubtful.  It seemed easy enough to navigate but for me impossible to use.

Mango Languages Lesson 6

Let's Learn Hebrew???
With a little help from Daniel again, I was able to access the site with Mango Languages.  I had to either be in the state or Daniel had a way of getting me in.  I spent a couple of hours practicing my Hebrew and my Spanish.  I really liked being able to hear my pronunciation along with the narrator's.  I think I was limited in what I actually could accomplish because of my location.  I kept getting bounced from the site telling me to log in and use my password which would not work.

If I used my email from Daniel I could access the site but all I could actually see was the list of languages and the lessons so I tried two, both Hebrew and Spanish.   I found this would be helpful if I was traveling to another country and could download the basic language to my iPad and use it to study.  I did download the app from iTunes but ran into the same problem of not being in the state.  I will try to use it when I am back in Alaska.  It was easier to use in Alaska and I think it is a great site to recommend to those who are traveling.

I really liked being able to repeat phrases and hear how I was improving and then taking the review.  What I didn't like was not being able to copy the writing part easily to practice writing as well as speaking.

I enjoyed the Cultural anecdotes  that were offered about the language and the people.  I think students would enjoy using this site but I wonder if I am missing other functions that can be accessed.

Disculpe ¿Hablas Inglés? I was able to copy this by goggling it rather than from Mango, I learned it mean't Formal form;Excuse me, Do you speak English?

Hebrew letters are impossible but with a Mac program you can have a Hebrew Keyboard which makes it a little easier but goggle was the way to go.

The Hebrew Greeting Shalom has a Universal meaning of Peace and it is the greeting used when saying hi, saying by or just "Peace be with you!"

I spent about two hours on this lesson and it was interesting.  I think I would show my grandson how he could learn some phrases in PIRATE?  He would be fascinated.

Lesson 5- OXFORD REFERENCE COLLECTION

Once again I had a few issues with being able to get on this site but after trying several methods I managed to get in and found a variety of References that are very useful.

Question1

   I went to the English Dictionaries and Thesauruses link and looked up "Habeas Corpus", I found there were 7 different dictionaries that had entries for the term.

2.  I used the same link but a different subject; that of Guide to Grammar and Writing which I liked because often our kids don't know the difference between the parts of speech and this site was well illustrated and certainly easy to navigate.  The song that illustrated nouns was a well known Oscar and Hammerstein song from the Sound of Music, My Favorite Things!

3.  The next question asked we use the same link but in the Visual Dictionary and look up "Boat", I did and I found the following examples of boats and ships

4.  I was now having lots of fun and I went to the link for English Reference and found 18 different titles for English Language Reference.

5.  For this one I selected the "Irish Dictionary and the word "wealthy" and this is the reference I got.

6. The next question was to go to link for Quotes and John Locke

8.  From the Oxford Reference home page I went to Encyclopedias and did a search on Syria, the difference between the two sources the global handbook and encyclopedia, handbook provides information on every country in the world with a quick reference fact box and valuable supplemental information comparing Syria to other countries in the world.  An encyclopedia only gives facts on the one country you are looking up rather than comparing world wide.

9.  There are 25 definitions for the term "recycling" and unfortunately I could not find Refine by Book option, but when searching I found more than 20 references to books with information on recycling including encyclopedia of Science, environmental books and books about healthy living.

Reflections:
I wanted to share some warmth and nature from California for all of my Alaskans!  Summer is coming for us too!


This was a good lesson for me as I have never used any of these resources and the first thing I am doing now is going back to the Quotations link and picking out some of my favorites to add to my signature line on my emails.  I love when I receive mail from Bookworm with fabulous quotes to think about.  I did spend quite a long time on this lesson because I kept finding more things to explore and I think I put in around 3-4 Hours but it was well spent.  I actually posted some new quotes to my signature line in mail.

Goldilocks hits roadblock to the Heritage Quest Site!

I must share the latest problem I encountered with try to access sites in Alaska from an outside location.  I site Heritage Quest read my web address and knew I wasn't in Alaska and would not let me enter.  Thankfully, with the help of our teacher and facilitators the problem was cleared up by the end of the day.  I am impressed with the timely way this was handled by all and I want to say, "Thank You", I can't wait to continue with Lesson 2!  What a great support staff, now someone in the class please read this and comment so I know I really am posting correctly!
Exercise 4A and 4B
Now I have found another kink in my assignment for Lesson 4A and 4B, because I am out of Alaska I cannot get on the data base for this lesson.  It reads my URL location and it appears I cannot get around this.  I will skip this until I return to Alaska and then redo the assignment.  I appreciate the quick response from Daniel again advising me what to do.

Lesson 4A and 4B

I was in Alaska only for less than a week but in Homer at my DKG conference I managed on a Saturday night to contact Tutor.com through live homework help. It was very exciting to get through  so quickly and find a real person helping me with Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader.  
Because I was so limited in time I asked a question about English currency, math problems using pounds and pence.  My tutor caught my mistake within seconds and suggested an alternate way for me to find the correct answer.  I was impressed but sad that you cannot access this site from outside Alaska.  I see many possibilities for students to get help from this site and the fact they can access it with their library cards is wonderful.


I am hoping I have time when I return to Alaska around the middle of May to try to finish the rest of the assignment.
I am now back in Alaska, May 21, 2012 and I have completed part 4B although I did have difficulty transferring to my blog.  
It was easy to do the advanced search in the Teacher Reference Center to find articles about teacher education and Alaska. My first attempt was incorrect and I found over 543 articles, when I did follow the exact directions it became more realistic with a total of 58 results which I then narrowed using the full text option and after 2008 for the date to a total of 9 articles and some were repeats.
I was impressed with the example of the 3 minute video because as a retired teacher unfortunately most of my current research is into medical issues and it really gave an incite into finding current journal articles about many things I am involved with.

I think this information of how to search for specific articles and resources is very important but having had no familiarity with it's use I found it quite difficult and time consuming.  I probably spent over 3 hours and trying to figure this out.

Lesson 3 Reader's Advisory-NoveList by Goldilocks goes Digital

 I just finished editing this entire lesson and I lost all my information by clicking on the wrong arrow----how totally frustrating.  I will start over and say I found this fascinating because I haven't used this resource before and I have a "reluctant reader grandson" who is 9 and in the 4th grade at Barnette Magnet School.   The only series he has been turned on by and read every book was Jeff Kinney and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.  He can read if he is engrossed because he has read Lego Directions, Science experiments etc.  His 3rd-4th Grade teacher would not let him do any book reviews on the Kinney' books so it has been a constant battle to get him to read.


Using NoveList K-8 I found some other others he may like and it was easy to make a list and email it to his Mom!  I also kept a copy for this summer when I am back home.  I see the usefulness of this resource even if I am just volunteering at school to help kids find other reading series they may enjoy.


In looked at How To Use NoveList support center and in the Knowledge Base services I found trainings offered as well as self training online downloads for most subjects.  I was especially interested in the Audiobooks, Biography reference center, kids search and Small Engine Repair.


I read Book Recommendation Article and I have copied the 7 sites into my notebook as I feel each is good and uniques in it's own way.
I have used a couple of them before just by using goggle and Good Reads!


My reflections on this lesson is that it will be one of my favorites and most useful sites in this course.  I enjoyed all the time I spent on this even when I lost all my information.  I am not taking any chances so I will publish without editing!!! HA, good luck.
